Finally – Posting The Praise

One of my many faults is that I always thought I could do any thing. So, when I told my sister Shifra I was going to write a memoir – she died laughing, literally. I sat next to her bed in the Tel Aviv hospital as we reminisced about our life, growing up in Jerusalem. She laughed with me shortly before moving on to a better world.

I was inspired to write FROM JERUSALEM TO BEVERLY HILLS by my grandchildren, with a desire to leave for them my history and that of my family, Palestine, Israel, America – their roots. I am sure they will read the book one day in the future. However, now that the book is out, like all authors from time immemorial, I would like everyone to read it.

Alas, I found that even if your book is published by one of the big publishing houses, in these times of tumult in the publishing business, an author has to work hard publicizing, selling, pushing and touting his own horn. Many thousands of titles come to light every year, but most slip into and remain in the dark where they get no attention.

This is why, I have been told, I had to have a special page in my blog for the praise I received for my book. So now you can read the praise – excerpts from the many emails I have received from readers – in the blog page called PRAISE THE… BOOK.

So, to make some waves, I had sent the book to the 2010 Jewish Book Awards contest in New York.  Fierce competition, the book didn’t receive an award in this contest; I was beaten by good writers – Philip Roth’s memoir was only a finalist!

However, last month, I appeared in front of a couple of hundred people in New York, members of the Jewish Book Network, to make a presentation of my book and participate in a year long program that may present an opportunity to speak to many Jewish groups around the country. I had the honor of appearing with experienced, recognized and award-winning writers. Dina and I enjoyed the experience immensely; visiting friends and good NY restaurants were the bonus.

This week the Jewish Book Network sent an email to its members which mentions my book and has links to the book trailer video and its Amazon page.

As some of you may know, in May, my book received an “HONORABLE MENTION” – 2nd place in category – in The 2011 Paris Book Festival.

The whole Authorship experience brought us much excitement. I hope someone up there,  directs my family, especially brother Yudke and sister Shifra, to Amazon in the sky so they could read my book in which they star.

Charlie Rose Was Disappointed

Henry Kissinger and Hillary Clinton appeared together on Charlie Rose program “conversations with…”. I watched it last night. I had hoped that we will hear about the vision of the State Department for the future international relations for the USA, about our standing in the world as it changes.
When Mr. Rose asked what are the interests and goals of the US and how we go about achieving them in the developing Arab Revolution countries, Clinton recited a laundry list of mainly democracy and social aspirations, such as freedom, equality, distribution of wealth, education for girls etc., items you would expect from the rebels spokesman. Henry Kissinger had to butt in to remind us that we should not forget the competition and rivalries between the big players, such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran and others.
Charlie inquired about the most difficult task for a Secretary of State. Hillary, again, went through a long list that mainly included managing of people. “New people are coming in and old ones are leaving all the time.” she complained, and they work under pressure while “people shouting at us from all sides.” In contrast Henry said the most difficult for him was to find the time to think about the medium and long-term planning for our international standing.
Kissinger, his frustrating slow heavy accent notwithstanding, sounded like a statesman, brought forth a vision and strategy for the future. Clinton sounded like a retailer, an owner of a small grocery store complaining about her hard work.
I could see disappointment on Charlies face.
Do people with accent understand the world better?

George Will is better than me

My friend the Doctor couldn’t put my book From Jerusalem To Beverly Hills down until he finished it. As a reward (I think) he sent me today a great email with a link to George Will’s essay in the Washington Post.

Mr. Will analyzes the reasons, mostly the cons of getting involved militarily
in a conflict in yet another country, in Libya. In August of 2009 I wrote an essay
against increasing involvement in Afghanistan, warning that next will be Somalia,
Yemen, and so on. Were we going to send armies around the world? I asked.

I wish I was as eloquent as George, but since I ain’t and he is great,
I recommend you click here to read some words of wisdom.
I hope our President gets to read it too. What do you think?

Happiness of Arab revolution

If you have watched some TV reports in the last few weeks you could not miss the excitement projected by the American journalists. They got caught in the happiness of the Muslim revolution and the democracy just around the corner.
These journalists and their predecessors are experienced in such events, one just needs to go back and watch some old tapes of their jubilation about the fall of the Shah and the new democracy in Iran.

One of the drawbacks of “maturity” is watching these news reports, knowing how nonsensical and naive they are. Even worse is watching the reactions of top politicians and country leaders as they measure the political correct winds blowing in most media.

My memoir made the list

My memoir From Jerusalem to Beverly Hills Is listed with numerous other books, some by literary giants, the likes of Philip Roth, Isaac Basheviss Zinger, Dershowitz, Dali Lama, Itzhak Shalev, Amos Oz and even George Bush.
The list is on a charity organization website. If you buy a book by clicking on its cover image on their FALL 2010 list, they get a buck or so from Amazon for Jewish charity.

Read my book and do good at the same time- what an idea.
